Mimosa Students Advance to State Tech Contest

Angela Aquino and Samira Marquez-Gomez will head to Macon in March.

Angela Aquino and Samira Marquez-Gomez, Mimosa Elementary students, recently teamed up to win first place in the third grade multimedia category at the Fulton County Technology Competition.  Their project was a Prezi - cloud-based presentation software - on the countries of the world. The teammates decided on the topic for its relevance to their current curriculum and because each girl has family members from countries outside the United States. Marquez-Gomez and Aquino researched their project by talking to foreign family members and searching online using Google. They also inserted videos to enhance their presentation.  The project took them the entire first semester to complete. Next, they will advance to the state technology …

Roswell Reacts to Proposed Big Creek Parkway

The city unveiled plans Wednesday for Big Creek Parkway, a two-lane road that is expected to divert traffic from the interchange of 400 at Holcomb Bridge Road.

If it’s rush hour, you probably want to avoid Holcomb Bridge Road at all costs. A proposed new road could allow you to do just that, in the area around 400. On Wednesday night, city officials brought out a design for Big Creek Parkway, which would run parallel to Holcomb Bridge and divert local traffic for about 2 miles. The idea is to relieve some of the congestion around 400. But there were plenty of concerns from neighborhood residents who turned out to a public workshop at Mimosa Elementary. Several people complained that traffic is already a problem on Warsaw Road. During evening rush hour, cars waiting for the light to turn at Holcomb Bridge can sit through several lights. And the traffic can back up as far Mimosa Elementary, a half …

HALLELUA! Finally a plan to address real transportation needs but what will the incumbents use as a platform issue for the next 25 years as they did for the last 25 years. The city does have enough bonding capacity to finance such a well overdue project. Instead they prefer a bond for synthetic turf athletic ball fields & bicycle paths.   more ›

Residents Tell MARTA How to Solve Traffic Problems

At a public meeting Tuesday night, area residents told MARTA what's needed to solve traffic congestion. The meeting was part of the Connect 400 project.

Tired of sitting in traffic? Area residents got a chance to say so Tuesday night, and to propose some solutions to MARTA. About 10 people came to a public meeting held by MARTA at Mimosa Elementary School in Roswell to get public input on solving transportation problems. MARTA is conducting a study for a project called Connect 400, which is looking at traffic problems in Fulton and Dekalb counties. The project is specifically targeting the busy area around Ga. 400, from the medical center at I-285 to McGinnis Ferry Road near the Forsyth County line. It also includes Route 9 and Dunwoody. “You all live and work in this area, so you know traffic is a major issue,” said Jason Morgan, the project manager and a regional planner with MARTA. …

Mimosa Gains AYP Status

The Roswell school had students retake tests to earn its Adequate Yearly Progress.

Mimosa Elementary School has earned Adequate Yearly Progress status following a successful re-test efforts last spring. “Each year, the testing targets for Adequate Yearly Progress increase and become more challenging for all schools to meet,” said Fulton Superintendent Robert Avossa. “It’s exceptional that so many of our schools continue to meet these goals, but we will keep providing the instructional support needed so that every school will reach its AYP targets. Results released yesterday by the Georgia Department of Education show that the number of Fulton County schools making AYP during the 2010-2011 school year has increased to 75 schools – or 73.5% of the district. Four other schools also made AYP after retaking tests. S.L. Lewis …
