Students at Mountain Park Elementary in Roswell are not only reading about what it’s like to be a scientist, they'll also get up close and personal with it when the Georgia Tech Laser Exhibit stops by next week. This year’s Science Expo and Laser Exhibit will be held Thursday, Oct. 11 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at the school. The special addition will feature student-submitted experiments, research projects and scientific collections. For nearly a decade, the Science Expo has been an opportunity for Mountain Park students of all grades to display non-competitive and non-judged science work that is completed at home with parent assistance and submitted for inclusion. Each student who enters their work receives a ribbon and a certificate.

Fifth grade students in the talented and gifted classes at Mountain Park Elementary recently developed their own businesses and then gave the profit to charity. As part of an economics unit, "Mind Your Own Business," students in Leslie Gilbert, Ellen Rubin and Kati Searcy classes were challenged to create a real-world business. Students had to decide on an original product to manufacture, choose the name for their company, decide what to do with their profit, and then finally, create and market the product. "Kooky Kupz," "Write-On" and "Word Wizards" were the result of creative thinking and hard work. The three companies raised over $2,000 total and donated all of the profit to local charities.

An elderly woman who struck and killed a little girl with her car in 2009 is out of jail now after serving 76 days.
The 83-year-old Roswell woman who struck and killed a 5-year-old little girl on Davis Road in December 2009 is out of state prison after serving 76 days of a three year sentence, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Edith Main Anderson was sentenced to three years for the death of Karla Campos - a student at Mountain Park Elementary School - in January after she entered a guilty plea so the family would not have to go through a trial. According to the AJC, Anderson went into a "panic mode" that led to the horrifying tragedy. In an attempt not to hit Campos' school bus, which was stopped to let children off, Anderson swerved and struck the little girl, who died en-route to the hospital.

Kati Searcy's fifth-grade class was presented with the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream 'AAS in Action' Award during a ceremony, Tuesday, Mar. 1.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division recently selected Mountain Park Elementary School's fifth-grade Talented and Gifted class as its 2010 "Georgia Adopt-A-Stream 'AAS in Action' Award" winners. Every year the award is presented to one group in Georgia whose methods to educate their community on environmental issues have gone above and beyond. Typically, these groups use non-traditional formats like You Tube, art, music or another multimedia application to raise awareness about water quality. Mountain Park students, who were already monitoring the health of the stream at Leita Thomson Memorial Park, secured the award by creating a company they called, "Adopt-A-Wreath," through which they made and sold seasonal wreaths to friends …

As tragic as this accident had been, it was an accident! I assume, Ms. Andersen did not aim for the little one. I am profoundly sorry for all concerned. But it is a horrible tragedy, it is not a criminal act.   more ›
