Watch what you eat when you go to the movies: That large popcorn has enough calories for the whole day.
It's a movie-night routine. You line up for your tickets and then you line up for your popcorn and other concession snacks. You look at the tiered pricing and decide that it only makes sense to get the best value and purchase the extra-large popcorn and soda. While that might be the most logical choice for your wallet, it's a very scary choice for your body, with a large popcorn and soda alone adding up to a full day's worth of calories – never mind any additional treats like candy. According to dietitian Gloria Tsang, founder of nutrition network HealthCastle.com and author of "Go UnDiet: 50 Small Actions for Lasting Weight Loss," people are often shocked by the amount of fat and calories in movie theater popcorn because they've always …

A Civil War veteran gets roped into an intergalactic war that he wants no part of. This film is part 'Avatar,' 'Star Wars,' with a whole lot of 'Cowboys and Aliens.'
Taylor Kitsch (from "Friday Night Lights") plays a Civil War veteran who finds himself on Mars caught up in all sorts of interplanetary fighting in "John Carter." The original story was penned by Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 years ago. Now it's a 3D epic, from the folks who brought us "WALL-E," and is bigger than life. John Carter is a small man compared to the 12-foot-tall, four-armed creatures around him, but he does have his own superpowers while on the Martian planet. If you haven't read the book, there is a lot to keep track of here. Carter wants to go home; an alien species wants him to marry their queen. Another alien is smitten with him. Another group wants him to save their people. Toss in some shape shifters and, well, it's kind of …

The next action hero is easy on the eyes but don't let her fool you, she'll knock you out!
Gina Carano makes her Hollywood debut as a butt kicking, no nonsense having special ops contractor, caught in a web of betrayal in "Haywire." Carano, who has a mixed martial arts background, plays Mallory Kane. A killing machine who is on the run trying to piece together a puzzle. Michael Douglas plays the intelligence chief, Ewan McGregor plays her boss and her ex, Channing Tatum plays a fellow operator, and Antonio Banderas plays Puss and Boots…oops, her Spanish connection. Michael Fassbender rounds out the cast as a British MI-6 agent posing as Mallory's lover. The film is really all about the globetrotting visuals with flashbacks and long extended fight scenes, it's hard at times to get a hold of the plot. Director Steven Soderbergh, …

Have you noticed the price increase for a DVD rental at your local Roswell Redbox kiosks?
Just like almost everything else these days, the DVD rental price at the local Redbox kiosk has gone up. The daily rental charge for DVDs is now $1.20, goodbye dollar movies. "The price change is due to rising operating expenses, including new increases in debit card fees," the company news release stated. "This marks our first price change in more than eight years as we work hard to keep prices low for our customers." But Redbox is trying to ease the pain of the price increase by discounting the first day of all online DVD rentals to $1.00 from now until Nov. 30, though additional rental days will be $1.20. Daily rental charges for Blu-ray™ Discs and video games won't change, according to the release. Visit the company Web site if you …

Not ready for big movies yet? Little kids will love Kidtoons!
If you're longing for the day when your entire family can enjoy a movie in the theatre together, like I am, consider this happy compromise: cartoons on the big screen. With a preschooler and a toddler, the day when we'll all enjoy the same in-theater movie is dismally far away. Luckily, there's a fun (and cheap!) movie dress rehearsal, of sorts, just for kids. Studio Movie Grill on Holcomb Bridge Road offers a Kidtoons Matinee movie at 11 a.m. every Saturday. From Care Bears and My Little Pony to Bob the Builder, you can enjoy a show for only $2 per person, which is a great price in case you have to leave early. The seating is tiered, so there's a better chance that even half-pints will be able to see the screen. And they serve actual …
