Is your New Year's resolution to de-stress already stressing you out? Here are some tips to help you unwind.
2013 will bring lots of New Year's resolutions, and the stress of keeping them up along with it. Dr. Megan Hood, a clinical psychologist with an expertise in stress management at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center, said trying to attain a more stress-free existence is a pretty popular goal around the holidays and the New Year. But staying away from stress is not as simple as making a New Year’s Eve wish. “That tends to be a common goal, a nice broad goal,” Hood said. “But it also tends to be challenging.” Still, Hood has some tips to keep stress at bay. 1. Enjoy the moment. Don’t always rush ahead to the next thing, Hood cautions. Take a second to just enjoy the small things in life: a catchy song playing, a nice smell or something …

Five tips to help you keep your resolution.
Are you making a resolution this year? Do you want to lose weight, gain a new skill or organize your house? Whatever your resolution is, here are some tips to help you stick to it throughout the year. 1. Make it attainable. Be sure that your resolution is attainable. Sticking to your monthly budget is attainable—making a million dollars may not be. 2. Tell everyone. If you tell everyone about your resolution, you are more likely to keep it. If you want to quit smoking, you can even go as far as telling your friends that you'll give them $50 if they catch you lighting up. 3. Be specific. If you want to get fit in the new year, set a specific goal. For example, instead of saying you want to get fit, say you want to lose 10 pounds and tone …

Taxpayers looking to claim a deduction for charitable donations only have 10 days left to give before the end of the 2012 tax year. Goodwill of North Georgia is preparing for what will be its busiest donation rush of the year. “We always receive our heaviest volume of donations from Dec. 26 to Dec, 31. Last year we received more than 87,000 donations during the last week of the year,” says Director of Public Relations Elaine Armstrong. Goodwill says making a donation can help families de-clutter items they’ve accumulated during the year and make room for new things they received for Christmas. When you give items in good used condition or …

The South is steeped in tradition and many of those traditions revolve around food. Two of the dishes that have been prepared through the years as we ring in the new year are Hoppin’ John and greens. Hoppin' John is a black-eyed pea dish. The peas symbolize coins. A shiny dime, thrown into this black-eyed pea and rice dish, is said to bring good luck to the person who finds the dime in his serving. Of course, if the recipient bites down on the dime, then the good luck only comes to his dentist. Turnip, or other greens, are another traditional Southern dish which is often served along with the Hoppin' John. They make a great pair. The color of the greens represents money and is said to bring a prosperous year. There could be more to having…
