North Springs Students Build Pool on Stage for "Metamorphoses" Play

High school students break new ground in technical design for play, which runs Jan. 13-21.

Audience members will experience something unique at North Springs Charter High School’s production of “Metamorphoses,” this month. For starters, they won’t have their normal theater seats. The audience will be seated on stage, surrounding a pool built by the student technical design team. “It’s definitely the most challenging and exciting set we have built,” said junior Jacob Alexander, who lives in Roswell. The tech design major brainstormed the entire pool structure. The 12 foot by 18 foot plywood structure contains 4,000 gallons of water. The set is not yet complete. “It’s a very physical show,” said Marty Aikens director and drama teacher, “A lot of movement a lot of swimming. This is just a classic piece of theater. We have a four …

Georgia Ensemble Theatre offers complimentary tickets to Roswell residents for Nov. 4 performance.

Georgia Ensemble Theatre (GET) will provide complimentary tickets to residents of Roswell for this Friday, Nov. 4 performance of the musical "Glimpses of the Moon." As the official performing company at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, GET is happy to provide a complimentary performance for the community each season.       "Glimpses of the Moon" is a sparkling romantic musical and dance extravaganza follows the jazzy whirl of New York high society in the “Roaring 20’s.”  Popular but penniless Susy and her friend Nick devise a get-rich-quick scheme to marry and live off their wedding presents while they help one another look for suitable millionaires. The plan works perfectly - until they fall in love. Based on Edith Wharton’s 1922 novel, …

Roswell's More or Less Players Present “Divine Stella Devine”

A group of seniors from the Roswell Adult Recreation Center are sure to entertain local residents during a run of the play "Divine Stella Devine," which opens this Friday, Sept. 23.

The Roswell Ramblers are at it again: delighting local residents with their rendition of "Divine Stella Devine" by popular community theater playwright, Eddie Mcpherson. The Ramblers' drama club, More or Less Players, will introduce local residents to Stella Devine, the aging star of the popular Ritz Theatre. In the play, Devine and her fellow company of actors are preparing for the epic play "Civil War Darlin's," when a visit to a rehearsal changes everything. Between the cast of characters like the director, the playwright, the supporting cast, some visiting reporters and a set of twins, things get confusing quickly. Throw in Trevor, a bad actor with a worse toupee, who really thinks he is fighting in the Civil War; and an overbearing …

Kids' Corner: Leita Thompson Memorial Park

Hiking, exploring and fishing - and it's free!

Back yards aren't as wild as they used to be. So if you need some outdoor space where your kids can run, explore, chunk rocks and fish for bream, you might love Leita Thompson Memorial Park. Located right off Highway 92 beside Roswell's Art Center West and the new dog park, Leita Thompson Memorial Park is a beautiful natural area maintained by the city of Roswell. Miles of hiking trails will lead you through the forest, past meadows and over small creeks. We've seen crayfish, owls, hawks, vultures, squirrels, rabbits and deer there, and my kids love to play in the creeks. The meadow also includes picnic tables and a site sculpture that can be played like drums to create interesting sounds. If you want to introduce your kids to fishing, …

Play is a Child's Language

Understanding your child and bettering the parent child relationship by observing and sharing in play time.

Q.  My child is not learning anything at preschool. All they do there is play. What is all this "child centered" theory about? I want my child to learn when she goes to school. and, Q. How can you help my child if all he does is play when he comes to your office? A. As a play therapist for child clients, I hear this statement and this question frequently.   While we play therapists are trained in depth to utilize play to assist children in their growth and healing in a therapeutic setting, I want to help parents better understand how play can be an agent for enriching parent child relationship and helping kids develop strong sense of who they are in the world. I also want to help parents appreciate and better understand why it is so …

What Is Play Therapy?

A common question answered in a way that helps parents and other adults understand the definition and benefits of Play Therapy.

Q. Can you explain what Play Therapy is? I wonder if it’s something my child might benefit from. A.  The Association for Play Therapy defines Play Therapy as "the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development." That’s the formal definition.  I would say Play Therapy is the standard and most effective means of helping children express what is going on for them internally and in their world. Dr. Garry Landreth, RPT-S teaches that play is a child’s language and toys are his/her words.  Play Therapists are trained in-depth on how to 1) create and…

Go PLAY: An Activity Center for Kids

Roswell's best place to stay and play, especially over the holidays!

With school almost out for the holidays, mothers everywhere are excited ... and maybe a little freaked out. Long days at home with cold temperatures outside mean that even the nicest elves might turn a bit naughty. Luckily for those of us in Roswell, there's a magical place where kids can safely jump, run, screech, bounce and play. It's called PLAY Activity Center and it can be a lifesaver in more ways than one. Colleen MacDonald originally opened The Playroom in 2005 so that she could take her daughter to work at a child-friendly business. What started as short-stay child care in a shared space grew to today's PLAY Activity Center, which opened in 2008 as a 15,000-square-foot mecca of kid fun. Colleen receives requests for new locations …
