Germaine will compete on the 2002 Olympic luge track next week.
Raychel Germaine, of Roswell, qualified Wednesday for the 2013 Junior World Championships in Park City, Utah next week. Theresa Buckley, of Allentown, Pa. won a three-way competition, finishing ahead of Germaine and Sami Carone, of Park City, during the race-off Wednesday. Carone was eliminated by 0.04 of a second over the two heats. Buckley, a winner of two youth division Junior World Cups in Park City to start the 2011-2012 season, posted 1:30.316. Germaine was next in 1:30.899, with Carone third in 1:30.948. The U.S. group that will tackle the 2002 Olympic track Jan. 15-16 against 14 other nations. Roswell's own Raychel Germaine will compete in a race-off today, Jan. 9, to sled at the Junior World Championships on the site of the 2002 Winter Olympic luge competitions in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, Jan. 15-16. At the championships, young luge athletes from around the world, up to age 20, will race on the 1,300 meter track. International training began Jan. 4 and concludes Jan. 9 at which time the American contingent will race-off for two singles slots in both the men’s and women’s events. Ladies competitors in the race-off on Wednesday, Jan. 9, will include Germaine, Theresa Buckley, of Allentown, Pa. and Sami Carone, also of Park City. Roswell's Raychel Germaine ended her first and second Junior National Championships seeding luge races over the weekend in Park City, Utah, with a bronze medal. According to her father, Bob Germaine, the 19 degree temperature and fast ice was partially to credit for Raychel's approximate 0.05 seconds lead after the first run. She managed to put down a second run fast enough to retain the third place finish. Germaine, a junior at Fellowship Christian School, holds the ranking of third for all juniors in the U.S. now, which surpasses her personal goal of placing at least fourth in the Junior National seeding during the beginning of the season. Roswell Patch recently caught up with student, Germaine placed 14th, the second highest placing American for the girls luge team. Following the games, Germaine, 17, was selected from hundreds of Olympic athletes to light the torch during the Empire State Games, Feb. 2-5, in Lake Placid where she trains. Roswell youth, Raychel Germaine, placed 14th in the women's singles competition for luge at the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck on Monday, Jan. 16, according to the final results that were uploaded today. Germaine - who just turned 17 on Jan. 7 - is the southernmost athlete for USA's Winter Youth Olympic Games team and still she placed second highest for the girls USA luge team; behind Summer Britcher, who placed fifth.
