River Eves Students Take Up Close Look at Marine Life

Students dissected several kinds of sea life.

Fifth grade students in River Eves Elementary School talented and gifted (TAG) program recently concluded their study of Georgia’s Golden Coast by dissecting starfish, perch and squid, according to a school press release. All of these special creatures live in the oceans near our Georgia coast and the students had a fantastic—and challenging—time trying to discover the different parts of the creatures and what makes them work. They found that some of the circulatory systems and other parts were quite different than a human. River Eves Elementary is located at 9000 Eves Road in Roswell. The school has earned numerous accolades, including the Reward School Title for Highest-Performing Title I School in 2012 (top 5 percent). River Eves was …

River Eves Students Get 'Hands-On' Depression-Era Experience

The "Hooverville" project teaches fifth graders about the Great Depression in a way they can relate to.

Fifth grade students at River Eves Elementary built a replica of a small “Hooverville” — named after President Herbert Hoover — during December to learn about the Great Depression and the challenges faced by our citizens during that time. Students built shanties from cardboard boxes and duct tape, prepared homemade vegetable soup to serve in soup kitchens, and stood in bread lines.  To learn how the stock market crash in 1929 deepened a devastating depression and affected the nation for nearly a decade, fifth graders re-enacted how many people used whatever means they had at their disposal for survival. As Americans were forced to build make-shift homes out of cardboard boxes, used car parts and wood, River Eves students were separated …

Bullying is difficult to define, because in today's society it extends much further beyond someone taking your child's lunch money or pushing him or her around on the playground, and the effects of this type of behavior go much deeper than a black eye. Teasing, taunting, ethnic slurs and sexual harassment are all forms of bullying. Bullying behavior is generally repetitive hostility and …   more ›

Students joined The Clean Air Campaign in support of green travel methods.
