Help Roswell Plan Sun Valley Drive, Warsaw Road Connectivity

The city will hold a public meeting about the project, Wednesday, May 8.

Roswell's Department of Transportation wants your input on a project to potentially connect Sun Valley Drive and Warsaw Road, Wednesday, May 8. The initial phase of the proposed project would connect Sun Valley Drive and Warsaw Road, as well as add improvements to the intersection of Highway 9/Alpharetta Highway and Sun Valley Drive. The goal is to improve traffic operations and traffic connectivity along Alpharetta Highway and Mansell Road. But the city also hopes a side effect will be improved economic development for the surrounding area.  Proposed improvements include widening and extending Sun Valley Drive as a two-lane roadway to connect with Warsaw Road. Other proposed improvements include bike lanes, a 10-foot multi-use trail, …

GDOT Issues Inclement Weather Road Advisory

GDOT is urging motorists to monitor weather conditions in advance with the possibility of light snow and icy roadways expected Thursday and Friday in areas of North Georgia.

Weather forecasts for areas of north Georgia and Roswell are calling for rain and snow, and possibly black ice accumulations on roadways as far south as Columbus beginning Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Due to the expected inclement weather, the Georgia Department of Transportation urges motorists to plan ahead before traveling during this timeframe and check weather and road conditions before heading out. “We are continuously monitoring current weather conditions and forecasts as snow flurries and high winds are predicted for north Georgia," said Keith Golden, Georgia DOT Commissioner. "Weather forecasts indicate snow, black ice, fallen trees and damaged traffic signals are possible from Thursday evening through Friday …

Roswell Patch Readers Pinpoint Speeding Problem Areas

Here are the streets you've listed as some of the worst for speeding in Roswell and what the Roswell Police Department has to say about it.

When we asked you about the most problematic areas for speedy drivers in Roswell last week, Riverside Road, Crossville Road and Houze Road all landed among the worst. Via comments on the site and the Roswell Patch Facebook page, readers shared their thoughts on the subject. Of Riverside Road, Scott Long wrote on Roswell Patch: "A very long run with no traffic calming for nearly two miles straight equals danger (and a few single-vehicle very-high-speed fatalities in recent years). Of course, Riverside Road wasn't designed by city traffic engineers. It was a trail that turned into a dirt road that was eventually paved, long before it was part of any city. Very heavy bicycle traffic (which is really great BTW) means you can't narrow the lanes…

Please do something about Wavetree Drive. People use it as a cut through from Woodstock Road to Crossville, and vice versa. I have seen cars going 40+ MPH. There are many children now living and playing off of the road. It is completely unsafe and something needs to be done before a child is seriously hurt or killed. Please consider speed humps or another solution!!! Even speed detectors did not …   more ›

Roswell Reacts to Proposed Big Creek Parkway

The city unveiled plans Wednesday for Big Creek Parkway, a two-lane road that is expected to divert traffic from the interchange of 400 at Holcomb Bridge Road.

If it’s rush hour, you probably want to avoid Holcomb Bridge Road at all costs. A proposed new road could allow you to do just that, in the area around 400. On Wednesday night, city officials brought out a design for Big Creek Parkway, which would run parallel to Holcomb Bridge and divert local traffic for about 2 miles. The idea is to relieve some of the congestion around 400. But there were plenty of concerns from neighborhood residents who turned out to a public workshop at Mimosa Elementary. Several people complained that traffic is already a problem on Warsaw Road. During evening rush hour, cars waiting for the light to turn at Holcomb Bridge can sit through several lights. And the traffic can back up as far Mimosa Elementary, a half …

HALLELUA! Finally a plan to address real transportation needs but what will the incumbents use as a platform issue for the next 25 years as they did for the last 25 years. The city does have enough bonding capacity to finance such a well overdue project. Instead they prefer a bond for synthetic turf athletic ball fields & bicycle paths.   more ›

Workshop for New East, West Connector in Roswell to be Held Wednesday

Interested in learning more about a new roadway that would connect east and west Roswell? Stop by Mimosa Elementary, Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 5 p.m.

The city of Roswell will host a Big Creek Parkway community workshop Wednesday evening to go over the potential for a new roadway that would help alleviate local traffic congestion and provide better connectivity between the eastern and western portions of the city.  The proposed project is a new roadway from Warsaw Road just north of Holcomb Bridge Road, extending to the east across SR 400 (with a bridge) between the Holcomb Bridge Road and Mansell Road interchanges. The new road would then connect to the existing intersection of Old Alabama Road and Holcomb Woods Parkway and end at Holcomb Bridge Road. The proposed roadway would include a sidewalk and bicycle path to make walking and biking more convenient in the area. There is no access…

GDOT Says 400 Shoulder Driving OK Starting May 14

Motorists will be able to use the far right shoulder in two of the most congested sections of GA 400 north of I-285.

GRTA buses have been using the shoulders to avoid the worst traffic congestion for several years, but now in two southbound sections of Ga. 400 all motorists will have the same opportunity. Beginning Monday, May 14 the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will allow southbound motorists to drive on the outside (far right) shoulder lane of the most congested sections along Georgia 400 during morning commute hours.  This will be in effect at two locations: But don't try this on weekends or after the morning rush hour. The roadway shoulders will be accessible for commuting only from 6:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m., Mondays through Friday. Drivers entering southbound Ga. 400 from Holcomb Bridge Road during these times will have two dedicated …

Your Views: Improving Roswell Roads

We asked, Roswell Patch readers answered. Monday we asked you how you would improve local roads. Here's a sampling of your responses.

From the ambitious to the readily achievable, from upscale aspirations to the socially conscious, Roswell residents always offer some interesting and sometimes controversial ideas. Here's what you said in response to this week's Community Agenda survey. Which Roswell roads are the best? Why? Which Roswell roads are the worst? Why? Do you agree with the in-depth process in which roads are graded according to wear and use? If not, how would you restructure the process? Do you agree or disagree with these answers? Have more to say? Tell us in the comments below!

GA 400 Getting More Lanes in North Fulton

North Fulton motorists are getting some help this year from the North Fulton CID, GDOT–and even some of their toll dollars used for them.

Gov. Nathan Deal got stuck in traffic a few months ago, so North Fulton is getting another lane on both sides of GA 400. Deal announced funding for an additional lane north and south between McFarland Road and the toll plaza in his State of the State Address. It was a secret he'd been keeping for months, having worked on the proposal with Brandon Beach of the GA Department of Transportation Board. Deal is the chairman of the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA). All the funding is coming from a combination of motor fuel dollars (GDOT) and toll money from SRTA, Beach said. So you might not like the extension of GA 400 tolls, but at least some of that money is being used to ease your commute. As long as you don't have to drive after dark…

Lane Closures Lifted Throughout Georgia for Holiday Weekend

Georgia DOT will restrict Labor Day lane closures.

Another busy holiday weekend is fast approaching and to make traveling easier on Georgia roads and highways, lane closures throughout the state will be lifted. The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is suspending construction-related lane closures beginning Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 a.m. through Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 5 a.m. The Labor Day weekend, regarded by some as the end of summer, typically is a busy one. With that in mind travelers are urged to exercise caution as heavy holiday traffic is expected throughout the state. Also, road crews may be still be working in proximity to highways and safety concerns may require some long-term lane closures remain in place. Additionally, incident management or emergency, maintenance-related lane …

Motorists Warned to Avoid Section of Mansell Road

A GDOT contractor will be working on traffic signals from Kingswood to North Point Parkway.

Avoid Mansell Road between Kingswood Road and North Point Parkway on Tuesday and Wednesday while a contractor works on traffic signals. The city of Alpharetta announced in a news release that a Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) contractor will be working on traffic signals along Mansell Road between Kingswood Road and North Point Parkway between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Expect moderate to heavy traffic delays in and around the affected area–which stretches from both sides of GA 400–during these times. Lanes will be closed periodically at each intersection. Occasional signal outages will require police officers to direct and control intersection traffic. Alpharetta Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard said city representatives …
