A pair of transplanted Long Island firefighters are driving a surplus fire engine from North Fulton to Island Park, NY.
The residents of Island Park, NY, have had to depend on the kindness of others to keep their homes and businesses safe from fire since Hurricane Sandy, but a fire engine they can call their own is on the way. The Roswell City Council approved the donation of a surplus fire truck to the Long Island area community. Hurricane Sandy put as much as six feet of water in the Island Park fire station, and the seawater destroyed the community's own truck, and much of its equipment. Earlier today, members of the Roswell Fire Department and Roswell City Council gathered at the Roswell Fire Department headquarters to turn the truck over to the men who will drive the truck to Island Park. The Roswell Fire Department (RFD) invites the community to help send-off the Fire Engine to be donated to the Island Park, New York Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) on Monday, Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. The Village of Island Park, NY suffered devastating loss as a result of Superstorm Sandy. The 1991 Sutphen fire engine will be used by the department until a new truck can be replaced. In addition, RFD is also donating a PPV Gas Fan. The Roswell mayor and council unanimously approved the donation of both pieces of equipment at the November 14 meeting. The send-off will take place at Roswell Fire Headquarters, 1810 Hembree Road.

The fire burned through the night.
UPDATE, Sunday, Nov. 18, 1:34 p.m. - Roswell firefighters worked throughout the night and morning to contain a brush fire off Jones Road, said Roswell Fire Chief Ricky Spencer. Nearby homeowners first reported the flames blazing through the brush in a straight line last night, but when firefighters arrived, they realized they wouldn't be able to reach the flames with their trucks. Chief Ricky Spencer told Channel 2 the crews went in and were able to contain the fires covering three to five acres of land with the use of rakes and hand tools. The city of Island Park, NY was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, losing all of their fire equipment as well as their fire station.
The village of Island Park, NY has one fire truck, which is one more than it had yesterday, thanks to the city of Roswell. Roswell City Council voted unanimously to donate a 1991 Sutphen fire engine and a surplus PPV gas fan to the village of Island Park, which lost its fire station and all of its fire equipment in Hurricane Sandy just over two weeks ago. When in possession of surplus equipment, Roswell traditionally follows a policy to sell through a competitive bidding process. However, because of the tragic circumstances in Island Park, the city will forgo monetary compensation and donate instead. The ban is due to weather conditions, which are perfect for wildfire spreading.
The Roswell Fire Department has banned all outdoor burning on today, Wednesday, Oct. 31, due to problematic weather conditions. "This includes all recreational and cooking fires that are allowed under the city ordinance," Paul Piccirilli, Roswell Fire's deputy chief and fire marshal, wrote in an e-mail. According to Piccirilli, the blustery and dry weather makes outdoor buring a major fire hazard. "The safety of the community is our priority," he wrote.

Alpharetta firefighters are currently training to use a personal rescue system that lets them use any window frame to escape from a hostile situation, which Roswell would like to have as well.
With the use of a a simple rescue system that lets them use any window frame to get out of a dangerous situation, firefighters in Alpharetta won't need to wait for other personnel to put a ladder up to a window for them to escape an out of control fire anymore - it's a system Roswell would like in their firefighters gear, as well. "We are also looking at the same device that Alpharetta Fire has purchased," Roswell Fire Chief Ricky Spencer told Roswell Patch in an e-mail. Spencer said the department has already priced out the "very valuable tool," but is still looking to identify funds for the purchase. The Roswell Fire Department will celebrate 75 years of service in 2012 and would like to invite the residents and businesses of Roswell to an anniversary celebration in August. The event will also feature the grand re-opening of the Roswell Fire Museum. Roswell Fire was established in 1937 by a group of Roswell businessmen who saw the need for some type of fire protection for the city of Roswell. Since 1937, Roswell Fire has had eight fire chief’s. Roswell Fire currently employs 145 full and part time employees. Other interesting facts about the Roswell Fire Department history: The public is invited to attend this anniversary celebration, Aug. 11 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Fire Station #1, 1002 Alpharetta Street.

Within a half hour Roswell emergency crews put out a tree fire caused by a blown transformer.
Some residents and commuters along Woodstock Road in Roswell got an unexpected fireworks show this morning at the Jones Road intersection where a transformer blew. According to Roswell Fire Department Spokesman Paul Piccirilli and Roswell Police Spokeswoman Lisa Holland, the transformer explosion - which occurred around 7 a.m. - caught a nearby tree on fire. However, emergency crews quickly doused the flames and the scene was cleared by 7:30 a.m.

Competition was stiff as folks vied for the title of 2011 Kansas City Barbeque Society National BBQ Cup held at the Cumming Fairgrounds over the weekend. An estimated 93 professional teams as well as 34 backyard enthusiasts arrived Thursday night and settled in to begin the process of cooking their fare. Arriving from Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and bringing families, participants set-up quickly and before you could say ‘barbeque,' the smell of competition was in the air.
