Benefit for Injured Firefighter to be Held Saturday

Local emergency services personnel host benefit at Tony's Sports Bar this Saturday, Nov. 12.

Local firefighters are stepping up to assist one of their own - and asking for the community's help. Shane Dorfman, a firefighter with the Roswell Fire Department and Cobb County Fire Department, suffered a severe ankle injury that has put him out of work for several weeks. No longer able to put it off, Dorfman will have to have surgery to repair the damage, which is why friends and co-workers are raising money to help offset living costs while he's out. "Shane usually does events to raise money for cops and firefighters who are seriously ill and injured, which is the reason so many firefighters and police officers are trying to return the favor," said Patrick Apoian, an Atlanta Police Officer and founder of Humble Heroes. But at an awareness event on Tuesday, held jointly between North Fulton Hospital, Rural/Metro Ambulance, the Roswell Fire Department and Sen. John Albers, experts suggested that this is a dangerous time for kids around pools and other bodies of water. “We want to keep children’s safety on the forefront of our minds,” said Reg James, division manager for Rural/Metro Ambulance. “Backyard and neighborhood pools are still open.” For U.S. children five to 14 years of age, unintentional injury is the leading cause of death. Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional-injury deaths among children, following motor vehicle accidents. It is also the third most…
