Roswell Church Gets Historical Marker

Zion Missionary Baptist Church was first built in 1885.

Because of the combined efforts of Zion Missionary Baptist Church and the Roswell Historical Society future generations will know the historical significance of the Roswell church.  A marker now displays the history of the historical church, which was organized in 1871 by a group of dedicated African-American Christians. Thanks to land donated by white members of Lebanon Baptist Church, Zion Missionary Baptist Church became a one-story structure that also housed a school, according to the historical society. The church has survived two devastating fires; one that destroyed the original building in 1885 and one in the early 1960s. Park Ranger to Bring Roswell's Chattahoochee-Centric History to Life

The event is free and open to the public on March 7 at 7 p.m.

The Roswell Historical Society is taking area residents back in time to where the city finds its start - the river. National Park Service Ranger Jerry Hightower will lead a program on the "History of the Chattahoochee River Corridor." He has been with the National Park Service since 1979 and provides walking, talking "infotainment." You can find Hightower leading hikes throughout the network of trails within the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area where he typically mixes hard-edged statistics with homespun anecdotes and stories told in character. Roswell Historical Society Names 2013 Officers

Johanna Harned will take over as president.

The Roswell Historical Society recently installed its 2013 officers at the Gardens at Great Oaks in Roswell.  Roswell Historical Society member Tom Lynch presided over the installation of officers recently as the torch is passed from outgoing President Judy Meer to new President Johanna Harned. The Roswell Historical Society meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Gardens at Great Oaks, 786 Mimosa Boulevard, in Roswell. Informative programs begin at 7 p.m. and guests are welcome. The mission of the society is to collect, preserve, share and promote the history of the city of Roswell and environs. For additional history and membership information visit the website.
