Roswell Rotary Celebrates 62 Years as a Club

Nineteen past presidents were honored during the club meeting.

The Roswell Rotary celebrated 62 years of "Service Above Self" this past week. During the meeting, the club honored 19 of the past presidents in attendance. And because the Diamond Pin was not yet a tradition when Judge Maurice Hilliard concluded his Roswell Rotary Club presidency in 1967, current President Jacque Diamond pinned the Judge with the exclusive pin during the meeting. Other agenda items to note: Roger Wise, a cancer survivor, reminded the club how important cancer research support and donations are. Relay for Life Roswell takes place May 3-4.

Polio is 'Only a Plane Ride from Affecting Any Country, Anytime'

Roswell Rotarians were recently reminded that the fight to eradicate the crippling disease is still ongoing.

Recently, Charlene Hall shared just how close the world is from eradicating polio with the Roswell Rotary Club - but we're not there yet. As of 2012, only three countries still experience active polio cases: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Over the past three decades, Rotary International has raised more than $1 billion dollars and committed countless volunteer hours to fight the disease.  In 1985, when Rotary first began the fight to end polio, there were 350,000 cases. Last year ended with the lowest number of new polio cases, at only 250. Through the efforts of Rotarians around the world teaming with non-Rotarians, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, eradication of the crippling, and sometimes fatal disease, is closer than…

Locals 'Adopt a Platoon,' Send Care Packages to Troops

The Roswell Rotary Club and other local volunteers filled 195 boxes to send to military personnel.

The following is a first person account of a recent effort by several community groups to send items to the troops from Michael Gould Boy Scout troop leader and Roswell Rotary member. Roswell has always been a community that appreciates the brave men and women in the U.S. military who defend our freedom and risk their lives to protect ours.  After spreading word that the Roswell Rotary Club would be sending holiday care packages to several forward operating bases in Afghanistan, the city’s response was overwhelming. Over three quarters of a ton of items were dropped off at Roswell City hall and other places around town to be sent to troops who will be far from home this holiday season. Everything from batteries to Q-tips, and a thousand …

Local Leaders to Hold Human Trafficking Awareness Event

The event will be held Tuesday, Aug. 28 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Roswell.

Think human trafficking is a third-world problem? Think again. While the issue is something that plagues countries throughout the world, the metro Atlanta isn't immune - in fact, it's a hub. It's one of the many reasons Roswell Rotary will host "Stop Human Trafficking Now" next week.  “We feel Rotary is the missing link and are very excited for Rotary to get involved in this and feel we could really help make a difference to Stop Human Trafficking" said Roswell Rotary President Dave McCleary. This meeting Tuesday, Aug. 28, will be one of the club's most informative and inspiring yet, say organizers. The goal is to develop an educational and awareness program that can be implemented though out our district and eventually Rotary …

Human trafficking is a big subject. When the media in Atlanta cover the topic of human trafficking, the focus tends to stay on the sexual exploitation of children under the age of 18, which of course gets everyone worked up. As it should. So, personally, that's what I'd like to understand. And it hasn't been easy. GSU's Mary Finn's findings were of interest to me, especially since it's one of the…   more ›

Roswell Rotary Club Receives Habitat Hammer Plaque

The honor was awarded thanks to the club's work on the Phares family home.

Recently the Roswell Rotary Club was presented an official “Hammer Plaque” by Russ Hayes, CEO of Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia.  The plaque was presented in recognition of the Rotary Club's participation and support of a recent Habitat home for the Phares family. The home was built as part of a combined effort with five local Rotary Clubs and ten local high schools. The Roswell Rotary Club partnered with Roswell High School to help build the home through Habitat, a non-profit, Christian housing ministry that builds simple, decent homes for purchase by low income families who demonstrate a capacity for responsible homeownership.
