Buses were diverted from their routes to Mountain Road Elementary and the school was locked down until police determined a bow hunter caused the scare.
A bow hunter on property near Mountain Road Elementary in Cherokee, not far from the Roswell line, had the school's administrative team activating a "Code Red" alert that diverted buses to an area high school, locked down the school and brought police to the scene. At 6:50 a.m. the administrative staff responded to the sighting of a man believed to be carrying a weapon near the school After diverting the buses that were en route to the school, the staff worked with the Cherokee County School District's Police Department, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the school district's Transportation Department and the Office of School Operations. "We were able to assess the situation in a relatively quick manner and determine there was no …

Legislators from Alpharetta and Roswell promise legislation dealing with charter renewals after Fulton Science Academy Middle School's application was voted down.
Reps. Harry Geisinger and Chuck Martin, as well as Sen. John Albers, took part in a press conference at Fulton Science Academy Middle School on Dec. 22, two days after the school's charter renewal was denied. The lawmakers said the Fulton County School Board needs to do the right thing. They proposed legislation that would require school boards to justify why a school's charter renewal shouldn't be automatic if it was meeting its financial and performance requirements. A few hours after the press conference, the school system dismissed the suggestion that the case be revisited immediately, and said the charter school's latest application revision would be heard in the next cycle. That heads the school toward closing next year.

Albers, Rogers say issuance of a charter for the Alpharetta school should be a common goal in the interest of Fulton County students.
As the Fulton County Schools System briefs media about charter schools, state Sen. John Albers and Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers asked for a resolution to be found in the Fulton Science Academy Middle School charter application conflict. “The academic achievement at Fulton Science Academy is a real success story. As a nationally recognized Blue-Ribbon school, and with the highest test scores among Fulton middle schools for an amazing four consecutive years, the students, parents and teachers should be commended and supported," the state senators said in their joint statement this afternoon. "The issuance of a new charter for this high performing school should not be the subject of educational factions but rather a common goal for …

Hembree Springs first graders recently explored math in a unique way.
Hembree Springs first graders took pumpkin carving to a whole new level for Pumpkin Day. First graders in seven classrooms used pumpkins to explore mathematical thinking, through estimation, measuring the circumference and weight of pumpkins. They made hypotheses on whether or not the pumpkins would sink or float. The students also estimated how many seeds would be found in each pumpkin, scooped them all out and counted every seed. At the end of the special fall learning activity, students were surprised to find that pumpkins weighing over 14 pounds did, in fact, float and they even found one large pumpkin which had over 500 seeds.

More and more such programs are needed in order to let children love math. Our present education system or public school does not always provide the challenges that can bring out the best from a student. Every American student has the capability to complete their school and hold postsecondary degrees. They have the expertise and talent; but schools fail to bring that out and we, the parents, need…   more ›

The Fulton County public charter school, which some Roswell residents attend, asked Alpharetta to give it time to update its traffic counts, look for other potential sites and seek a compromise with Windward residents.
A controversial rezoning application by a Fulton County charter school has been deferred at the request of Amana Academy. The public charter school wanted to renovate an existing office/warehouse building into a new home for its charter school. But the location is within Pod 14A of the Windward Master Plan development. That section of the master plan has been designated as a business center, which lists permitted uses as “Office-Institution, research and development, office-professional, light industrial and hotel conference center zoning categories.” Because school is not a permitted use, Amana Academy filed an application for amendment to the Windward Master Plan. The Alpharetta Planning Commission heard that application in July, but …

The Back to School fair at North Fulton Community Charities unites Roswell community.
The Back to School Fair, sponsored by North Fulton Community Charities, brought out hundreds of Roswell families for some free fun and school supplies on Saturday morning. At first glance, the jumping castles, games, free prizes and appetizing food made it look like a small carnival had come to town and set up tents in the North Fulton Community Charities parking lot. But one look past the fair confirmed the main attraction was definitely school supplies. Over 2,000 people attended the event and a long line of families waited patiently to choose backpacks full of school supplies. The line snaked around several caution cones and almost went from the building entrance to the road. While waiting, families partake in all that the fair offered…
