The inaugural Southeastern Conference Symposium will be held Feb. 10-12 in Atlanta.
A student from Roswell will be among the 10 undergraduate students to serve as The University of Georgia’s University Scholars at the inaugural Southeastern Conference Symposium next month, according to a recent press release. The Bioenergy Systems Research Institute and the Office of Sustainability chose Alexander Gomez, a senior biochemical engineering major from Roswell, to attend the symposium, which to be held Feb. 10-12 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.  A campus-wide competition was held for the distinction of University Scholar and a scholarship to the SEC Symposium. When children see the prevalence of science in everyday life and are exposed to the excitement of scientific discovery first hand, they are more likely to develop a lifelong appreciation for and understanding of scientific concepts, according to some studies. Such is the idea behind Hillside Elementary School's Science Day, an innovative, daylong program designed to expose students to the wonders of the natural world. Teachers and parents are excited about the learning opportunities the garden has created in just two short years.
The Crabapple Middle School “Learn and Serve Garden” grew from a seed of an idea via science teachers Glenn Mize and Jeanetta Lewisand and language arts teacher Shelley Merritt. The trio wanted to bring their lessons to life in the garden by giving students “get-your-hands-dirty” earth science experiences while giving back to the local community. Mize wanted students to experience science beyond the books, coupling what he learned in the garden from his father and grandfather. He wanted kids to see “the miracle” of how one seed from a dead plant can be planted to produce a vine that spreads out across the garden and bears fruit to feed hundreds. The middle school's team won the tournament for the ninth straight year.
The Fulton Science Academy Science Olympiad Team won the Regional Science Olympiad Tournament for the ninth year in a row at Gainesville State College this past Saturday, Feb. 18. The team posted its best team score in school history placing in the top five in all 23 events and winning 14 first places, according to Principal Kenan Sener. The team has qualified for the State Tournament, to be held March 24 at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta. Kids can get hands-on with science today at the Roswell Library during the "Subatomic to Super Sonic – A 'Magnetic' Adventure."
Summer has just begun, but students are already battling brain drain between all the video games and pool time. After all, there's only so many online games and diving board tricks one can stand. Head to the Roswell Library this afternoon, June 15, at 3:30 p.m. to attend the "Subatomic to Super Sonic – A 'Magnetic' Adventure" program. The program, which is open to kids ages 11-14, is a hands-on exploration of magnetism from electrons to rail guns. Hosted by aerospace engineer and science educator, Kevin Howard, the hour and a half long workshop will delve into the most fundamental aspects of magnetism and electricity. The Roswell Public Library hosted the Georgia State University Bio Bus Wednesday, April 6.
The Georgia State University Bio Bus dropped by the Roswell Public Library Wednesday, April 6 to give local students an opportunity to get hands-on with science. Students were able to perform several experiments during each of the four, 30 minute sessions aboard the bus.Â
