Albers Debates Welfare Act with Georgia State Law Students

Sen. John Albers engaged in a "lively discussion" about HB 861 with Georgia State University College of Law last week.

Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell) spoke with students in the Law and Social Welfare class at Georgia State University College of Law last week. Albers discussed House Bill 861, also known as Georgia’s Social Responsibility and Accountability Act and was signed into law this past April.  Instructed by Professor Courtney Anderson, the class prepared for the presentation by discussing the underlying policies and constitutionality of the bill and reading data produced by a number of organizations assessing the likelihood of the bill’s effectiveness. “Speakers are invited to the course to challenge students’ views on issues and help them to present legal arguments in a way that anticipates the response of an opposing party,” said Anderson. “We are …

OP-ED: State Sen. Albers Applauds Chick-Fil-A

State Sen. John Albers says it's time for people to respect others when they have a different opinion.

Glancing through the pages of American history, it is evident that our founding fathers were not guided by a culture that based its truth on the subjective societal norms of the day. Although norms evolve from generation to generation, these courageous individuals lived by a standard that never changes: the Holy Bible. Truett and Dan Cathy are no exception. Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-Fil-A, built one of the most charitable family-owned businesses in the nation while remaining true to Judeo-Christian principles. Given that Chick-Fil-A is a well-known Christian company, the recent uproar in the media regarding the company’s support of traditional marriage should not have come as a surprise. Dan Cathy, the president of Chick-Fil-A, …

Residents Quiz Local Legislators

Six state legislators stopped by Crabapple on Thursday night to give residents updates from the General Assembly, and answer their questions.

Roswell's own Sen. Johns Albers and five of his colleagues in the General Assembly whose districts represent parts of North Fulton and Cherokee counties answered constituents' questions in Crabapple on Thursday night. The town hall meeting brought a few dozen residents to the Crabapple Government Center to ask about topics ranging from gun ownership rights to charter schools. Dana Teagarden of Roswell wanted to know why legislators hadn't taken action when she presented them with her concerns about Fulton Science Academy Middle School. She particularly wanted to know why some of them supported the school that hadn't accounted for $6 million in bond funds, siding with it over the Fulton School Board when its members voted to deny the school…

Governor Signs 'Social Responsibility and Accountability Act,' Requires Drug Tests for Welfare Recipients

Four of Albers' sponsored bills, including the Social Responsibility and Accountability Act, were signed into Georgia law today, Monday, April 16.

Governor Deal signed several bills into law on Monday, including Roswell State Senator John Albers' HB 861, also known as the Social Responsibility and Accountability Act. HB 861 requires recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to undergo a drug test to receive welfare benefits. It became a source of controversy while it made its way through the Georgia Legislature, with many questioning whether legislators themselves should also submit to drug tests, as recipients of tax dollars. HB 861 is identical to SB 292, which was authored and filed by Albers in the state senate. Under this legislation, TANF applicants will undergo a swab drug test in order to receive benefits. This is modeled after the Mandatory Guidelines for …

Legislative Session Productive, Albers Says

The local senator says tax and education reform and bills said to protect children were successes.

Sen. John Albers (R-Roswell) shares his thoughts on the recently ended Georgia 2012 Legislative Session. The General Assembly concluded the 2012 Legislative Session at midnight on March 29. This session, Senators were laser-focused on passing legislation centered on fiscal responsibility, limited government, pro-business tax reform, 21st century education reform and protecting our children.   Fiscal Responsibility As part of our ongoing commitment to pass a fiscally responsible state budget each year, the Georgia legislature passed a $19.3 billion dollar budget for Fiscal Year 2013. In addition, the Social Responsibility and Accountability Act, which I sponsored in the Senate, received final passage on Sine Die and will now travel to the …

Bill Making Teachers Pay Back Bonuses Awaits Governor's Signature

HB 692, which follows a cheating scandal on standardized tests, would make those found guilty give back bonuses and pay raises.

The state Senate passed a House bill today that stiffens penalties for teachers who falsify student assessment results. It now awaits Gov. Nathan Deal's signature. According to lawmakers, HB 692 outlines a greater measure of accountability standards for teachers found guilty of falsifying assessments or standardized tests. A teacher who knowingly falsifies these test scores who gets a bonus or salary increase not only has to forfeit any bonus money, all money already received has to be paid back. This legislation followed a scandal in the Atlanta Public Schools in which many educators and administrators were implicated when the system's standardized test scores rose by phenomenal amounts in a short time. Many educators were asked to quit …
