Chance of Snow, Wintry Mix Through Weekend for Roswell

Portions of north and central Georgia may see flurries, sleet or snow this weekend and freezing temps through Sunday night.

The first weekend of March promises cold and even some potential snow flurries or a wintry mix as temps drop for parts of north and central Georgia. Overnight freezing temps are expected through Sunday night, and Friday night and Saturday hold slight chances of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a freeze warning that includes North Fulton. It's effective through 9 a.m. Friday. "A fast-moving but potent upper low sweeping across the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians [on] Saturday will bring a chance for at least light wintry precipitation to north Georgia," according to NWS' Hazardous Weather Outlook. "Any accumulations are expected to remain light at this time. Generally a half inch or less …

Snow Day? Winter Weather Rolls in Today, Tonight

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for north Georgia, which warns of light snow and black ice from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

Snow is expected across north Georgia this afternoon and tonight, according to the National Weather Service's winter weather advisory, which goes into effect at 1 p.m. and replaces the previous winter storm watch. A "cold polar air mass" is expected to spread into north Georgia as widespread rain shifts south. The result: Rain will mix with and change over to snow across portions of north Georgia, including Roswell. The heaviest snowfall would be in the northeast Georgia mountains. The winter weather advisory, which lapses Friday morning at 7, warns of light snow and black ice north of a Carrollton-to-Atlanta-to-Jefferson line and south of a Rome-to-Hiawassee line. Less than 1 inch of the white stuff is expected to accumulate on grassy and…

Winter Storm Watch: An Inch of Snow Possible

A winter storm could switch widespread rain to snowflakes on Thursday, but little to no accumulations are expected in Roswell, according The National Weather Service

Winter storms are possible in Roswell and across north Georgia on Thursday and into Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a winter storm watch for the area. Meteorologists say widespread rain should switch over to the white stuff sometime Thursday afternoon or evening, but the heaviest snowfall would be in the north Georgia mountains. The winter storm watch—in effect for Fulton and other counties from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning—means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Locations north of a line from Carrollton to Atlanta to Jefferson could see an inch or less of snow, while accumulations in the northeast and northwest Georgia …

Snow, Accumulations Possible Thursday Night

Roswell could get its first glimpse this winter of the white stuff as rain across north Georgia may turn to snow with the arrival of a deep cold air mass.

Roswell could get its first snow of the winter and of 2013 on Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. A strong low pressure system and ample Gulf moisture will meet, resulting in widespread rain and an associated deep cold air mass that will begin to spread across north and central Georgia on Thursday afternoon and evening, meteorologists say in a special weather statement issued today. As a result, rain could change over to snow across parts of north Georgia, including Fulton and other counties like Cherokee and Cobb. Despite recent unseasonably warm temps, residents could see some light accumulations of snow across parts of north Georgia by mid to late Thursday afternoon or evening, mainly on elevated and grassy …

A Year Ago ... Snow!

Do you miss the January 2011 snowstorm? Check out our slideshow of last year's wintry weather. Then take our poll and let us know how you feel about the frozen stuff.

A year ago today, metro Atlantans were battling a bear of a snowstorm. The storm dumped a half a foot or more of snow on the ground, closing schools for a week, disrupting some government services and leaving many of us in hibernation until the frozen stuff finally thawed. We may have temps in the 60s this week, but Patch wanted to share some cool images from last year's storm, shot by our editors, correspondents and readers. Enjoy.

If it's going to be cold, I want snow! Send me a note and I'll pick uop your groceries! I learned to drive in the stuff at an early age. Unless it's pure ice (or compacted snow), no worries here. Problem in this area is watching out for the other guy who doesn't know how to drive in the stuff.   more ›

Weather Watch: A Little Snow Heading Georgia's Way?

There's a chance parts of Georgia will see the white stuff over the next 48 hours, according to The Weather Channel.

OK, so we may not get a winter wonderland, but there's a chance northern parts of Georgia could see a little of the white stuff heading into Tuesday, if current weather patterns hold. The folks at The Weather Channel say on their site that an area of low pressure is developing in the upper atmosphere over Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. "Underneath this low," the Weather Channel article reads, "there may be just enough moisture and cold air to combine and produce snow or a rain and snow mixture in parts of the South." That's what it's looking like for Monday in parts of Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama. Going into Tuesday, "there may continue to be just enough cold air to produce wet snow or rain mixed with snow from northern …

City Prepared for Winter Storm

The city of Roswell has readied itself for the onset of winter weather headed our way Sunday and Monday.

The Roswell Fire Department is prepared for the potential winter weather headed our way Sunday night, said Roswell Fire Chief Ricky Spencer. "Many of our fire and rescue trucks are equipped with 'on spot' chains and alternate cables if the snow gets too deep," he said. Additionally, the city's Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has been actively monitoring the forecast and the radars along with the rest of North Georgia to see just how bad this predicted winter storm will be. "In the event the call volume warrants, we will activate our Emergency Operations Center to coordinate all of the city of Roswell departments as one, so that we can salt/sand the streets [and] cut trees out of the roadways if the ice accumulates," said Spencer. The EMA…
