Four Roswell Area Athletes Honored at Sports Champions of Greater Atlanta Banquet

The athletes were honored during the Sports Champions of Greater Atlanta annual banquet, Thursday, May 9.

The Sports Champions of Greater Atlanta held its 10th Annual Banquet, Thursday, May 9, and four of the 19 student-athletes honored were from Roswell schools, including Centennial High School’s Amy Martin and Chase Rosenberg, as well as Blessed Trinity High School's Kourtney Keegan and Paul Stevens. The Sports Champions of Atlanta, which held its banquet at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, honors high school seniors and coaches that have helped make a positive impact on the world. The organization recognizes seniors that have excelled on the playing field, achieved a high level of excellence in their scholastics and shown great character. Who's Playing in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament?

The Final Four is in Atlanta and these 26 players from Georgia, including a player from Roswell, hope the road to the championship game takes them home.

March Madness is here, and although no Georgia schools are in the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament brackets, there will be a distinct Peach flavor on the road to the Final Four. The Final Four returns to Atlanta — scheduled April 6 and 8 — for the fourth time in history. Atlanta has hosted the final rounds in 1977, 2002 and 2007. The Division II and III championship games are April 7 at Philips Arena. The NCAA field also includes more than two dozen players from Georgia who are on the rosters of 17 tournament-bound teams, according to data on Rivals.com. Roswell Gymnasts Take First at Gasparilla Classic

The meet was held March 2-3, 2013.

The 25th Annual Gasparilla Classic, held March 2 and 3, in St. Petersburg, FL, showcased the talents of several Roswell residents. Teams from several states and gyms, including Roswell Gymnastics Center, attended the prestigious meet.  Roswell Gymnastics Center's Zoey Hartman scored a near perfect 9.9 on vault. Kylie Noonan followed it up with a 9.700 and Emily Smith scored a 9.675. Roswell’s level 7 team came in first scoring 110.500. Also winning first place was Roswell's level 8 team with a score of 108.750. Roswell High Athletes Sign with Colleges

Ten students committed to schools on National Signing Day.

Ten student athletes from Roswell High School officially signed letters of intent to play at colleges around the country during National Signing Day, Wednesday, Feb. 6. Milton's Eagles Banned from Basketball Tournaments This Season

The boys basketball team can't play in region and state tournaments this season, and the school was fined for "undue influence" toward students transferring to the school.

Milton High School lost its boys basketball coach, David Boyd, and now the team has lost any chance to be in the state tournament this season. "The Georgia High School Association has placed the boys’ basketball program at Milton High School on probation for the 2012-13 season for violating GHSA rules in regard to 'undue influence',” GHSA reported on its website earlier today, Oct. 9. The team will not be eligible to participate in the region tournament or the state tournament. The program will be on "Severe Warning Status" during the next school year, but it will be eligible for post-season play in the 2013-2014 season. Milton High also had to pay an undisclosed fine. Roswell Area Students Named 'Athletes of the Year' by the AJC

Emily Sonnett and Kourtney Keegan took top honors in their respective sports this year.

Each year the Atlanta Journal Constitution names high school athletes in each sport as its "Atletes of the Year" - this year, the list included two Roswell area school sports stars. For girls soccer, Emily Sonnett of Fellowship Christian was honored as the top athlete in her sport for this past school year. According to the newspaper, the FCS senior had 25 goals and 12 assists during the 2012 season. Sonnett was also named an ESPN first-team all-American and a member of the Under-18 Women’s National Team. She has signed to play soccer at the University of Virginia. Within girls tennis, junior Kourtney Keegan at Blessed Trinity was 19-0. According to the AJC, she is the No. 1 high school junior girls player in Georgia. Keegan has committed …

Last Chance: Men's Summer Basketball League Registration Deadline this Week

The deadline is Wednesday, June 6.

Listen up you b-ball players! Consider this your final chance to sign up for the Roswell Recreation and Park's adult male basketball league. Teams can compete in this summer's 10-game regular season, followed by a single elimination tournament. Games, which begin June 11, will be played Monday and Wednesdays at Waller Park Recreation Center. Team managers can register prospective teams for $525 at Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill Street, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. There is no additional players fee. Roswell Summer Baseball Team Win Championship

The city's U11 Renegades baseball team recently won the 2012 South Cherokee Recreation Association Memorial Day Madness Tournament.

The Roswell Recreation and Parks Department’s 11U Renegades team, which is part of the Summer Tournament Baseball Program, were crowned champions of the 2012 South Cherokee Recreation Association Memorial Day Madness Tournament on Sunday, May 27.  The team posted a 5-0 record with a team batting average of .508. Coaches of the team included: Joe Orr, Jeff Jatcko, Shawn Wright and Kurt Huelsman. The Renegates team members are:

Roswell Girls Win State Tennis Championship

The team had an exceptional year, which took them all the way to the top.

A worn and shabby tennis ball flies out of bounds. Peachtree Ridge’s Abigail Owens drops to the dimly lit pavement in a disheveled manner. Simultaneously, Summer Ralston and the supporting Roswell crowd erupt into a blissful cry. The remainder of the Roswell girls varsity tennis team rushes the court and encircle Ralston - their state championship dreams had finally come to fruition. The Hornets arrived at the Clayton County Tennis Center on the overcast afternoon of May 12 with a 20-game winning streak and a state championship on the line. After a brief rain delay, the girls handily defeated the Lowdes County Vikings in state semi-finals in a quick 3-0 rout.
