Fulton County students incur fees as school year begins.
One of the principle concepts of a public education is that every child is afforded the opportunity to receive a no-cost education in the school district where their guardian resides. However, the reality of a public education is that opportunities to learn are provided, but the tools that go along with that learning may come at a price. For the 2011-12 school year, the Fulton County School System has a projected operating budget of $819.5 million, with nearly $600 million of that appropriated to instruction and pupil services. Over 65 percent of the budget comes from local revenue like property taxes and the remainder from state revenue (34.5 percent) and federal contributions (.09 percent). Area families asked to contribute to classroom needs.
When Fulton County students go back to school on Aug. 15 they are sure to bring along backpacks brimming with brand new school supplies. In addition to perfectly sharpened pencils and fresh notebooks, some area students and parents will be contributing community supplies to the classroom kitty. It's not uncommon for the teacher-created school supply lists in Fulton County to include items specified for use by the classroom as a whole. Due to budget cuts in recent years, a basic supply list often includes boxes of tissues, sanitizing wipes and paper towels to stock the classroom shelves. Back to school means time for supplies and perhaps a new backpack for the kids. But for some parents, the return to the classroom isn't that welcome because they don't have the money in the family budget to buy new school supplies. North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) hosts its annual Back to School Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, Aug. 13 to make sure low-income and disadvantaged children start school with the supplies they need. With so many recent natural disasters affecting thousands of people throughout the country, here's an easy way you can help. Roswell Police Department officers Zac Frommer and Jamie Major are coordinating donations for the public safety personnel in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana and surrounding communities that have been affected by the Mississippi River flooding. While this area along the Mississippi River is under mandatory evacuation, public safety personnel are required to stay behind to serve their communities. Supplies are needed for those serving, as well as their families.
