The Obama and Romney campaigns are just two of many social media accounts which have had follow numbers boosted by fake accounts.
How accurate are Twitter follower numbers?USA Today is reporting that President Barrack Obama doesn't have as many "followers" as it might seem and Mitt Romney made headlines in July for an unusal jump in followers over one weekend. According to a recent New York Times report, the practice of purchasing fake Twitter followers has become so widespread that StatusPeople, a social media management company in London, recently released a Web tool called the Fake Follower Check which will root out fake followers. Both Presidential campaigns have denied buying followers, but the @BarackObama account shows 28 percent of its 18.9 million followers to be fake, while the @MittRomney account shows 22 percent of its 920,118 are fake.

A new study suggests young girls are more aware of online cruelty than boys.
It's hard being a girl sometimes. The old adage sums it up quite well: sugar and spice. Yes, we are often the more nurturing and relational sex; but we're also experts in being able to discern and then dissect others - right down to the core. So how has social media allowed our gender to play into both our strengths and weaknesses? With 95 percent of American teens online and 80 percent of those same teens on social media sites, it is bound to highlight our triumphs and failures. A recent research study by the Pew Research Center shows that teens can be mean online. Shocked? The study - conducted through interviews with 12-17 year olds - says 69 percent of teens online think other teens are "mostly kind," while 20 percent said teens …

I think there is nothing wrong with buying followers. The huge number bought is only there to make you look interesting and worth checking out. The rest is really up to you whether real and active people (users) will like you enough to follow you. As for politics, one must look at several factors before casting votes but the number of followers on Twitter isn't one of those. If you want to buy …   more ›
