Bulldogs Roundup: What They're Saying About UGA Football vs. Buffalo

The University of Georgia has a new Uga and high expectations going into the 2012 season.

First things first: There's a new Uga in town and he's got a familiar face. The new Bulldog mascot, Uga IX, is none other than Russ, a frequent interim Uga during the line's tumultuous few years. The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Russ first saw Uga duty in 2009, when his half-brother, Uga VII, died. The selection is not without controversy, as some students the Banner-Herald interviewed are unhappy he's not a direct descendant of the original. Meanwhile, the human Bulldogs are preparing for their 2012 opener against Buffalo with some serious study. ESPN's DawgNation blog reports that coaches and quarterback Aaron Murray are burrowing into old game tapes from Buffalo's new defensive coordinator, Lou Tepper. The Macon Telegraph's Seth …

Red and Black Board Apologizes; Student Staff Might Return

"We felt like we were being walked on so we walked out," said Editor in Chief Polina Marinova.

An advertising executive has resigned from The Red & Black board of directors; students will have more input into editorial decisions - and there won't be a non-student review of stories prior to their being published. With all three of their demands met, the former staff of The Red & Black student newspaper may return to their jobs, said editor-in-chief Polina Marinova. Marinova and her staff walked out Wednesday night, fed up with what they believed was too much interference and emphasis on happy, upbeat stories instead of real news about the UGA community. "We'll talk among ourselves and then reapply for our positions," said Marinova. "We're happy they met our demands and that we finally had a voice." The Board of Directors will hire a …

SPEAK OUT: UGA's Student Newspaper Staff Quits

The decision to appoint a non-student to the position of editor-in-chief of The Red & Black caused the walkout.

The editorial staff of the student-run newspaper at the University of Georgia has walked out in response to the appointment of a non-student to the position of editor-in-chief. "The newspaper has always been a student-run operation, but recently, we began feeling serious pressure from people who were not students," said outgoing student editor-in-chief Polina Marinova in a statement. "In less than a month, The Red & Black has hired more than 10 permanent staff with veto power over students’ decisions."  Marinova went on to say that a member of the paper's board of directors had asked that the duties of the new editor-in-chief include a balance of good and bad stories. According to Marinova's statement, a "bad" story is one that writes …

UGA Council Nixes Regents' Policy on Immigrants as Unfair

The University Council urges the Board of Regents to rescind the policy preventing undocumented high schoolers from applying to selective public colleges.

After lively, impassioned debate, the University Council voted overwhelmingly Thursday to ask the Board of Regents to reconsider a policy that violates rules about non-discrimination. They want the Regents to lift a rule that bans undocumented high school students from applying to the state's five selective institutions. These include UGA, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Georgia College and State University and the Georgia Health Sciences University. The faculty was "within their rights to do what they did," said UGA President Michael Adams, who's meeting with Chancellor Hank Huckaby on Friday. "They debated the issue thoroughly and then reacted and voted." The resolution that passed is modeled largely on one adopted unanimously in early …

What Are Your Favorite Memories of Larry Munson?

The legendary voice of Georgia football died Sunday night at his home in Athens at the age of 89.

Larry Munson, whose legendary calls of University of Georgia football success echoed in the ears of the Bulldog Nation for four decades, died Sunday night in Athens. Munson, 89, died at his home with complications from pneumonia, his son Michael told the University of Georgia athletics website. Funeral arrangements for Munson had not been determined as of Sunday night. The beloved broadcaster was the “Voice of the Bulldogs” from 1966 to 2008, during which his passion for the Red-and-Black created some of the more memorable radio calls in college football history. Some of the most memorable: “Run Lindsay … Lindsay Scott, Lindsay Scott, Lindsay Scott” (1980 vs. Florida); “Again you guys, hunker down!” and  “Look at the sugar falling out of …
