Roswell Student to Represent UGA at Major Symposium

The inaugural Southeastern Conference Symposium will be held Feb. 10-12 in Atlanta.

A student from Roswell will be among the 10 undergraduate students to serve as The University of Georgia’s University Scholars at the inaugural Southeastern Conference Symposium next month, according to a recent press release. The Bioenergy Systems Research Institute and the Office of Sustainability chose Alexander Gomez, a senior biochemical engineering major from Roswell, to attend the symposium, which to be held Feb. 10-12 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.   A campus-wide competition was held for the distinction of University Scholar and a scholarship to the SEC Symposium. Students were selected for their leadership, service and academic scholarship related to advancing renewable energy in Georgia and beyond. In addition to Gomez, the nine …

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Tennessee Vols: Real Challenge or Another Romp?

The Volunteers are a 14-point underdog heading into Athens Saturday, Sept. 29.

"Perhaps no SEC program has blindsided Mark Richt's Georgia teams more viciously than Tennessee," David Ching writes for ESPN.com's DawgNation blog. Which is why the No. 5 Bulldogs won't be overlooking the visiting Volunteers this weekend, though the 3-1 Vols are a 14-point underdog. Ching's preview dredges up painful 2004 and 2007 defeats in which Tennessee helped deprive Georgia of SEC championships. 2009 wasn't so great, either. "If series history has proven anything, it's that Tennessee -- even when a decided underdog -- has a habit of delivering unsettling losses to unfocused Georgia teams," Ching writes. Threat or no, third-year Tennessee coach Derek Dooley finds himself under a lot of scrutiny in Knoxville. Dooley, 14-15 overall, …

UGA's Rutherford Hall Slated for Demolition?

The historic University of Georgia residence hall may soon be reduced to rubble.

Helen Fosgate transferred from Berry College to the University of Georgia in 1978. She wanted to live with older students, not freshmen in Creswell, and she wanted to live in a manageable building, not a highrise. So she chose Rutherford, an all-woman residence hall on the Myers Quadrangle. The building’s H-shape made interacting with other people easy, if not unavoidable. All the women who lived there knew each other to some degree, Fosgate said. “The architecture of the building created a sense of community,” she said. “It was a great choice for me because of its modest size.” Built in 1939 by the Works Progress Administration, Rutherford Hall has served as a residence hall for decades. But the historic brick building on South Campus may…

Mother Daughter Team Opening Home Health Care Business

A Roswell mother and daughter celebrated Mother's Day this year by going into business together.

The best thing about having a mother as a business partner, according to Sarah Chambers? “What’s she gonna do, fire me?” quips Chambers. Her mom, Sharon Morgenstern, says “I trust Sarah." "And she knows where I live,” chimes in Chambers. Morganstern celebrated Mother’s Day with a daughter who is also her business partner in Home Helpers of Roswell, which offers  non-medical personal home care and companionship services. The mother-daughter team, which launched the home-health care franchise in January, have spent the first part of the year getting needed licenses and are preparing for their first clients. Both women have backgrounds in business. Morganstern, 66, worked with radioactive isotopes as an X-ray technician and helped launch the …
