The "technology innovation center"in the former UPS facility could bring 1,000 jobs to Roswell.
Updated Friday, Dec. 21, 2:57 p.m. - UPS closed the doors at the Innoplex facility in Roswell back in 2009, but GM is set to reopen the facility for a technology development center that could bring up to 1,000 jobs to the region. Roswell City Councilwoman Nancy Diamond said the state's economic development division worked closely with the Roswell Business Alliance in bringing the giant automaker's tech department to town. She credits the tireless work of RBA Executive Director Steve Stroud in making sure the not-so-secret move by GM became a reality. UPS selects Roswell as one of five U.S. extreme testing locations for fuel-efficient fleet trucks.
The familiar brown UPS trucks are going green. Or at least they might be, once the results are in from the environmentally-friendly test truck currently running routes around Roswell. Executives at the shipping giant recently selected five “extreme” locations around the United States to test five new CV-23 prototype vehicles from Utilimaster/Isuzu to determine if they can meet the demands of UPS's operating needs. The goal of testing the lightweight plastic vehicle prototypes is to test the CV-23’s durability and determine if the lighter-weight trucks can withstand the rigors of UPS's daily delivery routes, while achieving a 40 percent increase in fuel efficiency over the traditional UPS diesel package car.
