Winter Solstice

Today is the Shortest Day of the Year

Friday, Dec. 21, is the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

The bad news for those who like daylight is we won't have much today.  Dec. 21, 2012, is the winter solstice in earth's Northern Hemisphere, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. It's also the day the Mayan calendar ends and the apocalypse is predicted. But, should we make it through, the good news is days begin getting longer again on Saturday! The sun's path will reach its southern most high noon position in the sky, directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, according to An Almanac Minute: The Winter Solstice. The short video is attached to this article. Keep in mind, that winter does intend to make its presence known today, too. Temperatures are expected to dip this evening to below-freezing in the Roswell area.
