The team of five friends from Roswell plan to "shake and bake" the Red Bull Soapbox Race in June.
When the Red Bull Soapbox Race speeds into town for their 2012 Atlanta pit stop in June, a Roswell team will be among those who've accepted the challenge to race in the "all-out downhill derby for everlasting glory." Translation: this should get interesting. The team, dubbed "The Dirty Birds," consists of Josh Trombley, Ben Crist, Dave Evans, Wayne Mitchell and Michael Frost. Inspired by the racing spoof movie, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," the friends are building a Formula 1 style race car sanctioned by fictional character, Bobby. It's a Southern race fan's dream come true. Here's what the team had to say about the upcoming derby: What was the inspiration for your racer? Our basic inspiration was to get the word out …

Roswell Police were required to let Mariano Saynez-Ruiz-Duran, a vice consular to the Mexican Consulate in Atlanta, after they pulled him over for speeding and DUI.
Mexican vice consular Mariano Saynez-Ruiz-Duran was pulled over last Friday by Roswell Police for going 91 miles per hour on Ga. 400, only to find he was also driving under the influence, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution. But, according to Roswell Police Spokesman James McGee, Alpharetta resident Saynez-Ruiz-Duran was not detained because of his partial diplomatic immunity status. However, he was cited as a "super speeder" for going 91 miles per hour in a 65 miles per hour zone and also cited for a DUI. "We did make contact with the Diplomatic Security Service to verify the driver’s status of immunity," said McGee, noting that Saynez-Ruiz-Duran's wife was called to the scene to drive the car once police let him go. According to the…

What's the bigger sign of spring in Georgia?

The azaleas in Augusta. The cool patterns in the mowed outfield grass. The too-blue water of Rae’s Creek. The too-white crispness of new home uniforms. And perfect green everywhere you look. Welcome to spring. Welcome to Day 1 of The Masters and opening day for the Atlanta Braves and most of Major League Baseball. It’s Tiger Woods vs. Rory McIlroy at Augusta National. It’s Tommy Hanson vs. Johan Santana at Citi Field. Because baseball season traditionally started on a Monday and The Masters always starts on a Thursday, this is an unprecedented spring sports convergence. If you don’t drive out I-20 to Augusta or fly to New York, you can sit in your air-conditioned living room and flip between the golf on ESPN at 3 p.m. and the baseball on …

Do you miss the January 2011 snowstorm? Check out our slideshow of last year's wintry weather. Then take our poll and let us know how you feel about the frozen stuff.
A year ago today, metro Atlantans were battling a bear of a snowstorm. The storm dumped a half a foot or more of snow on the ground, closing schools for a week, disrupting some government services and leaving many of us in hibernation until the frozen stuff finally thawed. We may have temps in the 60s this week, but Patch wanted to share some cool images from last year's storm, shot by our editors, correspondents and readers. Enjoy.

A couple from nearby Suwanee made their own New Year's fireworks as they reportedly have the honor of bringing metro Atlanta's first baby of 2012 into the world. Jennifer and Ryan Leo of Suwanee gave birth to daughter Scarlett Rayne at Northside Hospital just after the clock struck midnight Sunday, according to an e-mail by Katherine Watson of Northside Hospital. Scarlett weighted 7 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 21 inches long. She joins two other siblings, sisters Adagia and Teagan. "We watched the ball drop and then she came," Jennifer Leo said. The couple had little noise makers and tiaras to celebrate the event. "It was a fun experience," said Ryan. "This was better than fireworks. Every birth is special in some way, but this one is …

The Mansell Campus of the Atlanta Humane Society holds a grand opening on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m., a chance for the public to check out the facility up close as the ribbon is cut for the animal shelter. More than 300 dogs and cats were arriving at the campus to await adoption. This is the first operational expansion for the Humane Society in its 138-year history. The 32,000-square-foot building no longer resembles a car dealership, which is what the building once housed. Features of what Deborah Ann Smith, director of community relations, called a state-of-the-art facility include: The shelter is at 1565 Mansell Rd, Alpharetta. Call the Atlanta Humane Society at 404-875-5331.
