Roswell is a pretty great place to live; but what would make it better? Are there problems in town you'd like to see addressed? Are there opportunities to improve our city?
An involved community can bring progress and prosperity. Roswell Patch hopes to help foster some of that engagement here on the site. As the editor, I often hear people talk about their vision for the future of this community, its schools, economy and more. But I'd like to hear from you. What do you want to see happen? Your responses can help drive local focus and, in some cases, even action. Check back every Monday for new questions so you can share your ideas, suggestions and even your own questions. Then, the following Saturday, we'll publish some of the most interesting responses, pass on your ideas for change to local representatives and often try to follow up with reports on where the community stands on the issues you've brought up…

Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper held its annual member celebration Sunday, Dec. 4.
The Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (UCR) ended its 2011 event season on an inspiring note during its annual Member Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 4 at Roswell River Landing. The riverside venue was perfect for boat rides, standup paddle board demonstrations and rain barrel painting for kids. Special guest speaker Donna Lisenby of Upper Watauga Riverkeeper rallied the crowd with an important message about the connection between environmental advocacy and the creation of thousands of jobs needed to upgrade water and sewer systems, among other opportunities. UCR also took the opportunity to honor volunteers Pegi Amend, Bob Atkinson, Bill Hayn, Richard Jacobson and Mike Meyer, as well as hold a christening ceremony for its new boat. Guests …

A public meeting on the project was held, this week.
If you’ve ever used the sidewalk on the Roswell Road bridge over the Chattahoochee River, you know it can be scary; especially if you are jogging or on a bicycle. A joint project between Roswell and Sandy Springs promises pedestrian and bicycle enhancements that would improve safety and could ultimately connect parks in both cities. “Both Roswell and Sandy Springs want an eye-catching gateway structure,” said Mark W. Holmberg, consultant on the $2.8 million project. Public input meetings on the project were held on Tuesday at Sandy Springs City Hall and last week in Roswell. Few citizens attended the Sandy Springs meeting. The proposed project could include construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge, 500 feet in length over the …

The 21st Annual Roswell River Cleanup joins businesses and residents for common cause.
The 21st Annual Rivers Alive kicked off early Saturday morning in Roswell with over 500 local volunteers collecting debris and trash from North Fulton roads and parks. Milton High School students Emma Salter and Camille Gonzalez were among those who volunteered. “Whenever people run or bike past us on the streets, they thank us,” Salter said. Keep Roswell Beautiful Chair Kim Weber witnessed one family gather over 100 pounds of trash on their own. “We find the craziest stuff out here, like road signs and car tires,” Weber said. “Last year, one volunteer found an entire bag of old Vidalia onions. It was the stinkiest find.” Alpharetta Environmental Coordinator Terri Porter was among the organizers who helped organize the Roswell river …

The Chattahoochee River draws fun-seekers, but without proper safety precautions a day on the water can lead to a call for help from local rescue teams.
The Chattahoochee River is one of the metro area’s most attractive features. In fact, visitors from all over the Southeast make the trek to swim, float and paddle down its famed waters. Still, as much fun as the celebrated river is, its innocent appeal can turn dangerous – even deadly – when safety precautions are disregarded, say authorities. Part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area’s mission is to constantly educate people on the river’s dangers. One of the most dangerous things about the river is its rapidly rising water level when Cumming’s Buford Dam is released by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Lisa Coghlan, Deputy Public Affairs Officer for the Corps of Engineers, stressed that it's important to know when the …

The Associated Press is reporting a federal judge has tossed out a lower court ruling that would have severely restrict Atlanta’s ability to take water from Lake Lanier, starting in July 2012, unless the governors of Georgia, Florida and Alabama reached an agreement to end the long-standing water wars between the tri-state area. The appeals court reportedly ruled that the U.S. Corps of Engineers must first issue a final decision on whether Georgia can have more water before legal challenges can proceed. The decision Tuesday by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned an early order from U.S. District Court Judge Paul Magnuson. Roswell residents get their water from both the Big Creek Watershed and Fulton County, which gets its …

I will fully support this when I see the programmed and budgeted plan from Sandy Springs on Bicycle Facilities linking from the river going south. Roberts Drive is the only option I see, and was designated for a bicycle facility on their 2008 Transportation Plan. Extend it all the way down Roberts Drive to the newly-built bike lanes in Dunwoody. Here's some of the history I've had with Sandy …   more ›
