Dear Patients and Friends,

Fall is here, the weather is cooling off, and the school buses are back on the highways!

Car accidents are common this time of year as well. Over the years, I have seen thousands of car accident patients. Some come in soon after the wreck, while others want to try and “put it off.”

Please understand that trauma to the body, especially the spine, has consequences. I have often said that the body is unforgiving - what you do to it early in life catches up with you later.

I just celebrated another birthday. I am well past the half-century mark and pretty healthy. I have no serious health problems, take no medications, and feel pretty good most of the time. I do get adjusted every week. I want my body to function at its best. I’m sure that you want your chiropractor to be at 100% when you are getting adjusted!

Regarding the frequency of car accidents this time of year, if you or someone you love has been in an accident, you should get an exam. When you are hit or hit someone, you may look at the car and think, “That’s not too bad.” You may go to the E.R. or to your regular M.D. and an x-ray is made, which comes back asnegative. What negative means is that there are no broken bones, dislocations, fractures, tumors, etc.

What often happens is that the spine is wrenched or twisted beyond its normal motion, and sprained joints result. These types of injuries also cause muscles to stretch beyond their normal length. This pulling and stretching causes pain, inflammation, pinched nerves, muscle spasms, and swelling.

Traditional medical care after an accident is pain pills, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatories, rest, etc.

Consider this: if the joints are sprained and twisted, thus putting pressure on the nerves, how does the medication fix that? The truth is, if the sprained joints are not realigned, they will heal abnormally with scar tissue, which will result in spinal problems later.

Guess what else? It doesn’t matter if your car was “slightly damaged” or totaled. You still need to be examined. Any injury to the spine, no matter how minor, should be examined. If the spine is not treated and realigned, it will heal incorrectly. Untreated spinal injuries almost always lead to future spinal problems such as premature arthritis.

Call today for an examination, and let’s get you feeling good again!

Best,

Dr. Webster
