There is a balance that must be found in allowing students an opportunity to write thoughtful opinion without being censored and at the same time guiding and instructing students on when thoughtful opinion might cross over into purposeful inflammatory (and potentially defamatory) writing. There are always going to be issues that are hot topics with room for debate and differing opinions but there are journalistic standards that should be taught to the students. The editor of a newspaper typically approves all content before it is published. If the Principal is the Editor in Chief he/she will serve that purpose. It is important, however, for the Principal to also understand where that line is and not censor students from expressing opinions simply because of fears around political correctness.

@Andrea, this is a "real issue." Perhaps you can go either way but the calendar issue is directly linked to absenteeism, quality of life for families, mental and physical health of students, teachers and parents. A well researched and carefully compiled citizen's report was presented to the board this year illustrating all these
points and is available for review. If someone has that link and wants to post it here it might be of interest to people. There are, of course, many "real issues" and there are a lot of parents observing and invested in everything our school board is addressing and not addressing.

Thank you Mr. Fowler for an excellent report. I hope this will raise awareness for drivers and pedestrians near the high school.

Thank you Marilyn! Turns out there is recent research in New England showing a tie between poor quality of sleep in children and faux ADHD symptoms. I will be writing further articles on this topic as it applies to so many of our kids and parents in society today.

It does not matter which side of the calendar argument you are on. This is no longer about the school calendar. This is about the manner in which four members of our school board have conducted themselves as the elected representatives to make decisions that affect our children and families. Again, it is the manner in which four of these board members have chosen to conduct themselves and conduct board business. From Board of Education Policy http://www.cobbk12.org/centraloffice/adminrules/B_Rules/Policy_BBA.pdf "The job of the Cobb County Board of Education (Board) is to represent the citizens and taxpayers of Cobb County in determining and demanding appropriate organizational performance. 1. The Board will produce the link between the organization and the citizens of Cobb County, utilizing appropriate strategies to ensure input from students, staff, parents, and the community as a means to link the entire community." This is the basis for the chief complaint of so many Cobb County citizens. The calendar issue was simply the vehicle and trigger to bring to light the choices and behavior of the board that causes such discontent. All the data so far points to the fact that over 70% of Cobb citizens have been ignored and disregarded by their constituents and the best interest of the children may have been disregarded therein. It is no longer about the calendar.

There is research to support the resilience of children. There is research to show the negative effects of divorce on children. There is research to support that children can fair very well and thrive after their parents divorce. There are certainly other factors to be considered such as predisposition for and/or family history of mental illness, psychological disorders, etc. No matter how you slice it, however, it comes down to how parents manage and handle the process and the years after as well.

Mr. Fowler, thank you for yet another unbiased article. The MDJ could take a lot of lessons from your reporting. Thank you for doing this article in this format allowing for the voice of Mr. Banks and as my fellow constituents (including our revered editor has commented), I also would love to hear these same questions asked of all other board members.

There are a lot of parents deeply troubled by the whirlwind actions of our school board January, February and March of this year and the manner in which these actions took place. My understanding is that it is not simply about the calendar although that spurred the wave of grave concern. I am personally disturbed to read articles in the MDJ in particular that are clearly so slanted and biased that I'd have to question the ethics of the paper and the authors. For that reason, I look to Patch to report the facts as well as a balanced presentation of myriad opinions and I am grateful Patch has come along.

I think it's very important to report both sides of this. I think an article interviewing kids, parents and teachers in favor of the balanced calendar and why the desire is there to keep it at least for the next two years it was planned on being in place by so many citizens. I appreciate Mr. Fowler's fair and excellent reporting on these controversial events previously and I look forward to seeing a fair and balanced article that provides kids', parents' and teachers' positions on the other side of this argument.
