From ancient methods of living from the land, to modern hybrid woodsmen, take part in a day all about surviving and thriving in the wild! Learn to make Lean–tos, Forts and Spider Shelters- 12:30-1:30pm. Our Naturalist will help you create the perfect hideaways using branches, pine needles and other natural stuff. Beneficial Trees Walk: 1pm & 3pm – Masterwoodsman lead guided walks identifying important woodland trees while sharing their uses to the early pioneers. Early Games: 3-4pm - Play games enjoyed by children of early settlers and tribes. Native American Stories: 1:30pm & 3:30pm- Hear traditional Creek and Cherokee tales. Additional interactive primitive skill demonstrations by members of Masterwoodsman include: Frontier Kitchen- Lack of fine cookware was no problem for pioneers. Learn how to cook anything over an open fire from roasting vegetables to baking bread. Taking Shelter- Explore different types of shelters from debris shelters made entirely of found woodland materials to modern lean-tos. Daily Tools- Cups, knives, rope and more all had to be made by hand. Learn techniques for finding traditional materials and making the tools that made daily life a little easier. Beneficial Trees- Pines, oaks, maples and other trees all had different uses. Learn how they can best be used. Fire Making- Learn how to start a fire without a match from bow and drill to flint strikes.
